The Black Cats will be looking to secure a place in the Quarter Finals of the competition when they take on their Championship opposition this evening.

However, with the club also battling for promotion from League One, which no doubt ought to be the priority for Sunderland this season, manager Lee Johnson may well have to find a balance to his side for this one.

So with that in mind, we’ve taken a look at the starting XI we think Johnson could name for this cup clash with QPR, right here.

Speaking ahead of this game, Johnson has admitted he will look to freshen up his side for the trip to QPR, so there could be plenty of changes from the side that lost to Charlton at the weekend.

In goal, Lee Burge could return between the posts, giving him the chance to remain match sharp after falling behind Ron-Thorben Hoffmann in the pecking order for league games.

Ahead of Burge, left-back Denver Hume and the central defensive duo of Bailey Wright and Frederik Alves could also be given some useful minutes as they look to gain match fitness.

But with Niall Huggins set to be out for some time yet, Carl Winchester may once again have to occupy the right-back position.

Captain Corry Evans could return to the starting XI alongside Luke O’Nien, as he too looks to work his way back to fitness after injury.

With Johnson rating Alex Pritchard as 50/50 after Saturday’s defeat to Charlton, the summer signing could be given a break to protect him, which may see Dan Neil move into a more attacking role.

Elsewhere, Lynden Gooch could be brought into the side in order to give Aiden McGeady a break, after the winger’s below par performance at the weekend.

Upfront meanwhile, with top scorer Ross Stewart one you imagine Sunderland will want to keep fresh and available for league action, and Nathan Broadhead still absent through injury, Leon Dajaku could be handed the chance to lead the line for Sunderland from the start in the capital.
