Curtis Nelson has been a dependable figure at Cardiff City since signing from Oxford United in the summer of 2019, following the Bluebirds’ relegation from the Premier League.

The 29-year-old enjoyed a very strong first two campaigns at the club, as a crucial cog at the heart of defence as the Bluebirds made the play-offs in 2019/20, and he continued to be a vital part of Mick McCarthy’s rearguard as they were among the top six chasing pack in 2020/21.

The departure of Steve Morison is likely to be a positive occurrence in terms of Nelson’s future prospects at the club, with the former Norwich City striker typically preferring defensive options with greater ball playing capabilities than Nelson.

Should he get a new contract?

As things stand, that decision will likely rely on who walks in as the club’s new manager.

Should they remain in the dugout until the end of the season, they will be able to decide whether or not they want to keep Nelson around.

That said, if it gets to January and other second tier sides are eyeing a pre-contract agreement with Nelson, he would be well within his rights to entertain it given the lack of opportunities he has received at the start of this season.

When does his current deal expire?

As per Transfermarkt, Nelson is out of contract in the summer.

Given the enormous squad rebuild that took place in the Welsh capital this summer, it is likely that the Bluebirds recruit a new manager who is suited to working with the current personnel at the club.

Should the appointment be a failure, and Cardiff could be plunged into a relegation battle.

That state of affairs does not appear advantageous for Nelson which increases the chances that he leaves the Bluebirds before or at the end of the campaign.

Sean Morrison and Aden Flint, who Nelson thrived in defence with, have both been moved on, with the former still training with the club as he recovers from a long term injury, and therefore it could be best, as he creeps towards his 30th birthday, to engage with potential suitors when they make contact.
