Following the conclusion of last season, there has been plenty of change at Pride Park as Derby County have prepared for this season.

Wayne Rooney left the club with Liam Rosenior stepping in as manager since and with a takeover having finally gone through, the new boss has been able to make additions to his squad for League One.

This job is Rosenior’s first in senior management so there are bound to be questions over whether he can take the Rams straight to the top.

However, he has recruited well so Derby have a squad full of experience and are a team that should be fighting at the top of the table.

Curtis Davies has been at the club since 2017 and will no doubt have a key role to play in his side’s efforts this year.

Speaking to ITV Football, the player admitted that he has faith in Rosenior to take the club forward as he said: “It’s not too different as obviously Liam was a big part of last year, even though Wayne was obviously a great manager and managed the players Liam did 90% of the coaching so the way we play has been sort of a continuity with him, and he’s had that way of getting his players in so the signings that we’ve made have come because of Liam and the way he wants to play football.

“[The objective this season] has to be promotion, it has to be winning the league it has to be. If you don’t aim for that as a Derby County side with the signings that we’ve made you’re fooling yourself so as much as it will never be easy, a team on paper is never as good as a team on the pitch but we need to make that happen and make sure we do that on the pitch week in, week out.”

The Verdict:

It was a disappointment for Derby fans to lose Rooney earlier in the summer and you can understand why some may feel that experience is what’s needed at Pride Park now but the continuity between the old and the new cannot be underestimated.

As Davies points out, Rosenior had a big part to play at Derby for the past number of years and trained the team regularly meaning he is responsible for what’s on the pitch and that hasn’t shifted massively now so there’s not a lot of change to adapt to.

Furthermore, the new boss has been able to attract some great players into the club which you imagine will only boost their chances of achieving promotion this year.

There’s no doubt that Derby’s high hopes will put pressure on the new man but they haven’t done badly so far so why shouldn’t they be aiming high?
