CSKA Moscow chief Roman Babaev admits West Ham United beat Zenit St Petersburg to the signing of Nikola Vlasic.

There was talk of Zenit making a €35m cash offer for the Croatia international.

Babaev told Sport-Express: "There was such an option, yes. But for obvious reasons, we did not accept it. Of course, from a financial point of view, it was very interesting, but there are other obvious factors why we did not take such a step.

"The departure of a player like Vlašić is a serious loss for any club. But, as you know, nothing lasts forever under the moon. Other great footballers also left us. And then we wondered: how to live on?"

Vlasic left CSKA for West Ham this week in a deal worth €30m plus bonuses.
