Pep Guardiola responds to ‘sacked in the morning’ chants

Follow live coverage as Crystal Palace face Manchester City today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Meanwhile, it's Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Crystal Palace vs Manchester City

It’s full-time here at Selhurst Park, and the points are split between Crystal Palace and Manchester City as the game ends 2-2. Palace went ahead early through Munoz in the fourth minute, after a brilliant through ball by Hughes. He found the palace right-back, and he gladly smashed home his shot to give the home team a 1-0 lead. They should’ve gone two ahead in the 28th minute, by Lerma’s close-range shot was blocked at the last moment. They were made to pay moments later, as Nunes curled in a deep cross to the back post where Haaland met it with his head to bring the score level. It was 1-1 at the break, and City came out strong in the second period of the game. Most of the play was in the Palace third, but then in the 56th minute, the home team earned themselves a corner through Hughes. He took the set-piece and got his second assist of the game when Lacroix beat Walker to the header and sent it past Ortega. That made the score 2-1 to Palace, but the goals weren’t done yet. City hit back once more in the 68th minute through Rico Lewis. He was slipped in well by Silva, before wrapping a powerful right-footed shot straight into the top-left corner. That brought the game to parity again, but Lewis’ afternoon wasn’t done there. He received a dubious second yellow card in the 84th minute for a foul on Chalobah that reduced City to 10 men. It didn’t impact them too much, and the game finished level with both sides taking a point. Palace drummed up 1.30 xG against the champions, and they made 1.41 xG across the match. Thank you for joining this live commentary, goodbye!

The City bench were incensed by that yellow card decision for Lewis after seeing the replays. Of course, because it wasn’t a straight red, VAR could not get involved.
