Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson used his linguistic skills in talks with Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The Frenchman has joined Palace on an 18-month loan from Mainz, with the Premier League club possessing an option to buy.

"I spoke with (Hodgson) over the phone but I want to speak with him face to face," Mateta told the club's website. "[He spoke] French – good French.
"I know this manager is a good trainer with a good team."
