Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey says he did not make a Nazi salute on team-mate Max Meyerâs Instagram post.
On Sunday, German international Meyer uploaded a photo of he and the rest of the Eagles squad which appeared to show Hennessey holding one hand in the air and the other above his mouth.
The post was quickly deleted but not quickly enough for the 31-year-old shot-stopper to escape a backlash on social media.
However, the Welshman has strongly denied that his gesture was a reference to former dictator of the German Reich, Adolf Hitler.
âYesterday evening I had a meal with my team-mates and we had a group photograph,â Hennessey wrote via Twitter on Sunday.
âI waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it and at the same time put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry.
âItâs been brought to my attention that frozen in a moment by the camera this looks like I am making a completely inappropriate type of salute.
âI can assure everyone I would never ever do that and any resemblance to that kind of gesture is absolutely coincidental.â
Hennessey has made 16 appearances for Palace so far this season, but recently lost his place between the sticks to Spanish goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
