Ashley Young has aimed a social media dig at Nottingham Forest after the controversy surrounding the club’s defeat to Everton on Sunday.

Forest lost 2-0 to their relegation rivals in a six-pointer at Goodison Park, as goals from Idrissa Gana Gueye and Dwight McNeil secured Everton a vital three points.

The match was marred with controversy as Forest saw three penalty appeals turned down, each involving Young, and later releasws a statement taking aim at the PGMOL and match officials.

Young was not punished after appearing to kick through the leg of Giovanni Reyna inside the penalty box, before a handball claim against the 38-year-old was turned down by referee Anthony Taylor.

A third incident, in which Young brought down Callum Hudson-Odoi inside the penalty box was also waved away, with each claim checked by VAR.

Nottingham Forest released a statement on X after the game in which the club questioned the decision to have Stuart Attwell, a supporter of relegation rivals Luton, on VAR.

“Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept,” the post on X read.

“We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times.

“NFFC will now consider its options.”

Young has since taken to X to aim a subtle dig in the direction of Forest, with an image of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’ on his Spotify playlist and the caption ‘Old Skool Tunes for Today’ with two winking emojis.
