On Thursday, Cruzeiro rejected Flamengo’s offer of €10m for 50 per cent of Giorgian De Arrascaeta’s rights, with Cruzeiro and his third-party Investidot each retaining 25 per cent.
The 24-year-old was one of the Brasileirão’s most exciting players this season, scoring six goals and adding six assists in 20 matches while leading the Raposa to the Copa do Brasil title, which qualified them for the 2019 Copa Libertadores.
The attacking midfielder appeared in two matches for Uruguay at the World Cup, starting in their opening win over Egypt.
Flamengo continue their pursuit of some of Cruzeiro’s best players and the Cruzeiro board are not happy with the tactics of Daniel Fonseca, agent of Uruguayan international Giorgian De Arrascaeta.
After Cruzeiro rejected Fonseca’s proposal, De Arrascaeta left the training centre and has not been seen since.
“He (Daniel Fonseca) made a proposal to Cruzeiro, I did not accept it,” Cruzeiro vice-president Itair Machado said at a press conference.
“An hour later, he brought in the athlete, was harsh with Cruzeiro, and then sent the player away.
“He [De Arrascaeta] has not resurfaced at Cruzeiro and our legal team will fine the athlete.
“This happened a few years ago with this agent himself. I told him and I wanted to tell some news organizations that Cruzeiro has control that no one else will get here.
“Nobody will take away one of our players without Cruzeiro having an interest in the proposal.
“The agent said the director of Flamengo was with him in Uruguay and made that proposal. Now, whether it is true or not, Cruzeiro have no documentation, but it must be due to the actions of the player.”
Machado also claimed that Fonseca told him Flamengo offered to triple De Arrascaeta’s wages and that Cruzeiro are still open to selling the Uruguayan under the right conditions.
“If there is good value for Cruzeiro and we don’t have to mess around with his agent, we can suddenly sell. But not in the way he wants and the possible way that Flamengo wants.”
De Arrascaeta has a release clause of €28m and is contracted to the club until 2021.
Flamengo are still interested in star centre-back Dedé, however, Cruzeiro rejected their €9m offer and reiterated that he is not for sale.
Flamengo need to rebuild their attack and to hear back from Santos and Inter Milan over their proposals to buy Bruno Henrique and Gabigol, respectively.
