Cruz Azul vs. Vancouver Whitecaps projected lineups

Los Cementeros have had two weeks to prepare for their attempt at a seventh Concacaf club title and first since the 2013-14 competition. But it's unclear whether that preparation time will be welcome or problematic following an exit from the Liga MX Clausura semifinals to Club America.

With reports suggesting manager Vicente Sanchez is on the way out, it's not completely out of line to wonder whether all of Cruz Azul's attention will be on this occasion, as significant as it might be. There is also one major injury development: Central midfielder Andres Montano suffered a torn knee ligament during Leg 2 of Cruz Azul's quarterfinal win over Club Leon and is out Sunday.

Meanwhile, Vancouver playmaker Ryan Gauld remains out with a knee injury that has proven far more significant than first feared, and Sebastian Berhalter is suspended for the final because of yellow card accumulation. That will put even more of the chance creation burden on Pedro Vite, who has been up to the challenge so far in what has been a breakout season for the Ecuadorean.

While Vancouver has typically played in a 4-3-3, they did employ a 4-4-2 in Leg 2 of their semifinal against Inter Miami, and Berhalter's absence might convince Jesper Sorensen to do the same here. The Dane also likes to keep some of his powder dry for the second half, which is why Jayden Nelson and Emmanuel Sabbi could still begin on the bench despite Berhalter missing out.

Cruz Azul projected lineup (3-5-1-1, right to left)

Kevin Mier - Willer Ditta, Gonzalo Piovi, Jesus Orozco - Jorge Eduardo Sanchez, Mateusz Bogusz, Erik Lira, Charly Rodriguez, Carlos Rotondi - Ignacio Rivero - Angel Sepulveda

Vancouver Whitecaps projected lineup (4-4-2, right to left)

Yohei Takaoka (GK) - Edier Ocampo, Tristan Blackmon, Ranko Veselinovic, Tate Johnson - Pedro Vite, Ralph Priso, Andres Cubas, Ali Ahmed - Daniel Rios, Brian White

Cruz Azul vs Vancouver Whitecaps prediction

The Whitecaps have already proven their ability to earn results in Mexico City. Their Leg 2 quarterfinal win came after playing to a 2-2 draw against Pumas UNAM in the very same stadium that they'll return to on Sunday.

But earning a 90-minute result and a 120-minute result isn't the same, especially when contending with Mexico City's altitude. And unlike a battered Club America side that struggled in the late stages of its loss Saturday night to LAFC, Cruz Azul is relatively healthy aside from the Montano absence.

For third consecutive match in Mexico, the Caps force a 90-minute draw. But then Los Cementeros find a goal in extra time.
