If your nose hair is offside, you’re going to be penalised, especially at this World Cup where the automated offside system is in use.

But it still stings when you’re caught out by a ridiculously tight margin, as Croatians will attest on Thursday.

Croatia went into their Group F finale with Belgium knowing that a victory would seal their passage to the round of 16, and they thought they’d got a great chance to take the lead when referee Anthony Taylor awarded a penalty for a foul by Yannick Carrasco on Andrej Kramarić.

But while Luka Modrić was waiting to take the spot-kick, Taylor was called over to the pitchside monitor to check for an offside against Dejan Lovren when the ball was played into the box.
