Despite not playing a single minute in Manchester United‘s emphatic 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, Cristiano Ronaldo is dominating the sporting headlines.
Why’s that? Well, when the Portuguese superstar realised he wasn’t going to be coming on as a substitute, he decided to abandon his teammates before the final whistle was blown by the referee.
Footage of Ronaldo trudging down the tunnel when the clock read 89 minutes has unsurprisingly gone viral. According to The Athletic, he actually left the stadium before the end of the game.
The Real Madrid legend was clearly annoyed by the fact that Erik ten Hag opted to bring on Anthony Elanga for Jadon Sancho instead of him.
It was a bold move by the United manager, with some fans believing it to be disrespectful towards Ronaldo.
But while Ten Hag's decision to not bring on one of football's greatest ever with the team 2-0 ahead was perhaps a questionable one, Ronaldo's response cannot be excused.
It's insulting to both his teammates and United fans around the world, particularly those who paid good money to be at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.
At this point in time, it would probably be best for both parties if Ronaldo moved to a new club in the January transfer window.
It's clear Ten Hag doesn't view him as one of United's most important players and that's only going to result in more controversial distractions like the one seen at the end of the Spurs game.
Prior to kick-off on Wednesday, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry spoke about Ronaldo's current situation and his words look even more eye opening now.

Bang on the money, Thierry.
At the end of the day, Ten Hag is at United to make decisions that benefit the team as a whole, not ones to satisfy the needs of Ronaldo.
It's becoming more and more obvious that the Red Devils are a far better unit without the 37-year-old in the starting XI and if you don't believe that, just watch the highlights from their victory over Spurs.
Ronaldo's body can no longer do what his supreme footballing brain wants it to do and that's just a sad fact of the ageing process.
