Luka Modrić is going to win the 2018 Ballon d’Or and Cristiano Ronaldo has therefore decided there’s no point in him attending the awards ceremony.
At least, that’s according to Sky Italy, who report that Ronaldo will finish second in the running for the prestigious gong, with Antoine Griezmann coming third.
Their report also indicates that Griezmann won’t be in Paris to watch Modrić collect the award either.
Modrić – who won the Champions League with Real Madrid last season and was hugely influential in Croatia’s run to the World Cup final – has already won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year and The Best FIFA Men’s Player this year.
Considering Ronaldo didn’t turn up to either of those ceremonies, it won’t be a surprise if he completes a hat-trick of snubs on Monday.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or gala kicks off at Grand Palais in Paris at 21:30 CEST and according to Sky Italy’s sources, the women’s award will go to Brazilian star Marta, while the young player of the year will go to Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappé.
Given it seems like such a foregone conclusion at this point, we can’t say we blame Cristiano for giving it a wide berth.
