Cristiano Ronaldo was simply unstoppable at Real Madrid.
The Portuguese superstar might have burst onto the scene at Manchester United and proved a lot of people wrong at Juventus, but there’s no denying that he produced the best football of his career at the Bernabeu.
Besides, the statistics are simply frightening with Ronaldo eventually waving goodbye to the Spanish capital in 2018 boasting a record of 450 goals in just 438 appearances. Mad.
Ronaldo scooped four of his five Ballon d’Or trophies in the famous white jersey and bagged a quartet of Champions League trophies, as well as six domestic trophies, to boot.
And although his final season with Los Blancos might not have reached the astronomical heights of his true peak in the early-to-mid 2010s, there’s only denying that he was unstoppable right until the very last game.
After all, his final outing for Real proved to be a third successful Champions League final on the bounce, infamously putting Liverpool to the sword 3-1 with some help from Loris Karius along the way.
However, that wasn’t the only European final where Ronaldo got the better of Premier League opposition that season because he actually got his farewell year underway by reuniting with, well, United.
With Real having lifted ‘Big Ears’ the previous year against Juventus in Cardiff and Jose Mourinho having guided the Red Devils to Europa League glory, the pair of continental giants were set on a collision course in the UEFA Super Cup.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is where we set our scene as a viral clip of Ronaldo preparing for that very match has resurfaced on social media this week.
Edited together from Real’s open training session at the Toše Proeski Arena in Skopje, North Macedonia, it shows Ronaldo participating in a shooting drill where Zinedine Zidane lays off the ball and the player then swiftly get a shot away.
‘What’s so special about that?’ we hear you ask… well, it’s because Ronaldo just happened to show his Real teammates exactly how it was done in a clip so cold that it’s amassed over 1,300 retweets and 11,000 ‘likes’ at the time of writing.
With seemingly every player and their dog failing to muster a shot even vaguely threatening, the great man himself stepped up to the plate and made it all look so easy – check out the footage below:
It’s just some clever editing to make Ronaldo look good, right? Oh no, no, no, because we actually unearthed the full footage of the open training session and what we saw was quite remarkable.
While we’d obviously be lying if we said that Ronaldo was the only player to score, full stop, take it from us that the Real players truly were as rusty with their shooting as the video has you believe.
From Gareth Bale shovelling the ball miles over the crossbar to Marcelo harmlessly aiming straight down the goalkeeper’s gullet, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Real were cursed until Ronaldo had his go.
And boy was his demonstration of how to perfect the drill an emphatic one as he fired a thunderous strike into the top corner, crowning it off with a cheeky smile for good measure.
It clearly rubbed off on his teammates, too, because Casemiro and Isco found their shooting boots on the day to secure yet another piece of silverware for Real and Ronaldo’s collection during their most lucrative of partnerships. What a time to be alive.
