The 33-year-old ultimately joined Juventus in a deal worth €100m and his record currently stands at three goals in eight games for the Italian champions.
But according to Spanish outlet El Mundo, Ronaldo actually rejected the advances of three other huge clubs before choosing to move to Turin.
The first interested party was Juve’s Serie A rivals AC Milan, who are said to have offered €150m for the Portuguese superstar.
However, given the Rossoneri’s struggles in recent seasons, it seems Ronaldo felt a move to the San Siro was beneath him at this point in time, and he politely declined.
The next offer on the table was a fairytale return to Manchester United, where Ronaldo previously spent six years, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League along the way.
But José Mourinho will no doubt have been left rather frustrated by the fact United were unwilling to meet Madrid’s asking price for the five-time Ballon D’or winner, and negotiations swiftly came to an abrupt conclusion.
The third and final club to express a strong interest in Ronaldo were, according to this report, Paris Saint-Germain.
But the French champions’ offer came with a pretty huge condition. They wanted to wait until the final day of the transfer window to sign him in order to ensure that Real Madrid didn’t react by trying to sign Neymar or Kylian Mbappé.
Understandably, Ronaldo felt this strategy was too risky, and his answer to PSG was “Thanks, but no thanks”.
Ronaldo is then said to have asked his agent, Jorge Mendes, to find out if Juventus were interested in signing him.
The former Sporting CP has admired the Bianconeri ever since they tried to sign him as a teenager and he believes his chances of delivering Champions League glory to the Allianz Stadium are pretty high.
As has previously been reported elsewhere, Ronaldo is said to have been touched by the standing ovation he was given by the Juventus supporters after his stunning bicycle kick in the Champions League last season and the club felt like the right fit for him at the stage in his career.
El Mundo’s report concludes by saying that while Ronaldo was frustrated by Real Madrid’s reluctance to make him the highest paid player in the world, even if they had offered to double his salary this summer, he already had his heart set on a move to Juventus.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
