Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 58th hat-trick of his career on Tuesday night.
FIFTY-EIGHT hat-tricks.
That’s 174 goals simply in hat-tricks.
Luxembourg were the sorry victims this time around as Portugal ran out 5-0 winners.
The first two were penalties while he rounded off the victory with a comfortable header.
Official record books say Ronaldo is the greatest goalscorer in football history.
Of course, a certain player a few years junior may have something to say about that before the two superstars eventually hang up their boots.
While Lionel Messi’s overall tally may be slightly less than Ronaldo’s as things stand, we decided to look at the different types of goals scored by both players.
Using data from Transfermarkt, we’ve looked at every type of goal scored by the pair during their club careers.
Cristiano Ronaldo: 241Lionel Messi: 81
Cristiano Ronaldo: 109Lionel Messi: 24
Cristiano Ronaldo: 125Lionel Messi: 82
Cristiano Ronaldo: 47Lionel Messi: 50
Cristiano Ronaldo: 9Lionel Messi: 1
Cristiano Ronaldo: 15Lionel Messi: 9
Cristiano Ronaldo: 2Lionel Messi: 4
Cristiano Ronaldo: 48Lionel Messi: 48
Cristiano Ronaldo: 211Lionel Messi: 181
Unsurprisingly, both Ronaldo and Messi have scored more with their stronger foot than the other. However, Ronaldo has managed 109 goals with his weaker foot, whereas Messi has managed 81 with his right.
Again, it isn’t a shock to see Ronaldo come out on top when it comes to headers with him finding the net on 109 occasions, compared to Messi’s 24.
It seems ‘Penaldo’ is a more accurate nickname than ‘Pessi’ with Ronaldo finding the net 125 times from the penalty spot. Messi on 82 occasions.
But the Argentine is better from set-pieces outside the box with 50 successful free-kicks, three more than Ronaldo.
We’re not quite sure what Transfermarkt define as ‘long distance’ but we reckon about 35 metres out from goal. If that’s the case, Ronaldo has nine to his name, while Messi has just one - his strike for Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last season.
On the other end of the spectrum, Ronaldo also has more tap-ins to his name with 15 to Messi’s 9. However, the PSG star has more solo goals.
Ronaldo may have scored his 58th career hat-trick on Tuesday but the two players are actually tied when it comes club hat-tricks.

Finally, game-winning goals shows that Ronaldo may well be the most clutch player of the two. The Portuguese has scored a quite ridiculous 211 goals that has won the match for his side, compared to Messi’s 181.
For now, it seems as though Ronaldo just edges most of the statistics but it will be interesting to see who comes out on top at the end of their respective careers.
Either way, we’re talking about possibly the two greatest goalscorers in football history.
