On Monday afternoon, Marcelo said his farewells to Real Madrid.

The most successful footballer in the club’s rich history, with 25 trophies in total, got very emotional in his press conference, as we reported HERE.

Marcelo is set to embark on a new footballing adventure and it’s going to be weird seeing him in another club’s jersey.

The Brazilian left-back joined Real Madrid in January 2007 and was tipped to be Roberto Carlos’ successor.

But no one actually expected him to emulate his countryman quite so spectacularly.

Marcelo will go down as one of the greatest left-backs the sport has ever seen and as well as being a world-class operator, he was loved by those who had the privilege of playing with him – Cristiano Ronaldo in particular.

Ronaldo took to Twitter on Monday evening and posted a touching statement in response to Marcelo’s Real Madrid farewell.

Ronaldo’s tribute to Marcelo

He wrote: “More than a teammate, a brother that football gave me. On and off the fields, one of the biggest stars with whom I had the pleasure of sharing a locker room. Go with everything on this new adventure, Marcelo!”

Sorry, we’ve got something in our eye.

Ronaldo and Marcelo really were a deadly combination on Real Madrid’s left-hand side and a key part of the reason why the team won three Champions Leagues in a row.

And it’s safe to say Marcelo trusted his former teammate more than any other footballer.

A video has gone viral on social media which features various clips of the Brazilian celebrating a goal before Ronaldo had even put the ball in the back of the net.

Everyone needs a friend like Marcelo.

Although if you’re going to pick a footballer whose goals you intend on celebrating prematurely, Ronaldo is probably the best shout possible, as he rarely fails to convert an opportunity – especially from the penalty spot.

Back in 2017, after Ronaldo won his fifth Ballon d’Or, Marcelo labelled him as the greatest footballer in history.

“For me, Cristiano is the best player in the world,” he said, per Marca. “I haven’t seen [Diego] Maradona or Pele play. However, what I know is that there is no comparison.”
