Footage of Cristiano Ronaldo looking dejected during Manchester United’s draw against Southampton summed up how things are going for him and the club right now.
The excitement upon the Portuguese star’s return to Old Trafford in the summer was only ever going to last if results were good. And lately they haven’t been.
One wonders how Ronaldo feels as he watches United’s defence ship goals at an alarming pace, or when goalscoring opportunities are wasted.
Ronaldo only knows one mood and that’s win now, but that’s even more important considering he’s just turned 37.
In his mind there is no development plan, no long-term project. He’s a serial winner and he wants that to continue before he retires.
Can he do that with his current crop of teammates? Even he might have some doubts.
United’s players are facing a lot of criticism for their performances right now and it’s got us thinking about the worst players Ronaldo has played with over the years.
So, who are they?
Using WhoScored’s data, we’ve tracked down the lowest-rated player Ronaldo has played with in every season since 2009/10, his first season at Real Madrid.
We’re only taking into account league ratings, and players must have made at least 10 appearances to be considered.
2009/10 (Real Madrid)
Ronaldo’s rating: 8.54
Lowest-rated teammate: Raul – 6.54
2010/11
Ronaldo’s rating: 8.35
Lowest-rated teammate: Sergio Canales – 6.45
2011/12
Ronaldo’s rating: 8.28
Lowest-rated teammate: Jose Callejon – 6.40
2012/13
Ronaldo’s rating: 8.15
Lowest-rated teammate: Jose Callejon – 6.55
2013/14
Ronaldo’s rating: 8.27
Lowest-rated teammate: Casemiro – 6.46
2014/15
Ronaldo’s rating: 8.48
Lowest-rated teammate: Sami Khedira – 6.30
2015/16
Ronaldo’s rating: 7.99
Lowest-rated teammate: Mateo Kovacic – 6.50
2016/17
Ronaldo’s rating: 7.61
Lowest-rated teammate: Kiko Casilla – 6.73
2017/18
Ronaldo’s rating: 7.94
Lowest-rated teammate: Marcos Llorente – 6.45
2018/19 (Juventus)
Ronaldo’s rating: 7.68
Lowest-rated teammate: Martin Caceres – 6.30
2019/20
Ronaldo’s rating: 7.82
Lowest-rated teammate: Daniele Rugani – 6.41
2020/21
Ronaldo’s rating: 7.61
Lowest-rated teammate: Gianluca Frabotta – 6.38
2021/22 (Manchester United)
Ronaldo’s rating: 6.89
Lowest-rated teammate: Jesse Lingard – 6.27
So Lingard has been Ronaldo’s worst teammate this season, according to the data.
Only two Man United players to have played in at least 10 Premier League games this season have a rating above 7 though – Paul Pogba (7.17) and Bruno Fernandes (7.09) – so it’s more of a collective disappointment rather than a need to single out Lingard, who hasn’t really been given the fair crack of the whip anyway.
