Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer a Manchester United player.

On Tuesday, the club officially announced that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s contract was being terminated by mutual consent.

The news certainly wasn’t unexpected after Ronaldo’s bombshell interview with Piers Morgan, during which he criticised both Erik ten Hag and the Glazer family.

Ronaldo’s position at the club had quite simply become unsustainable and there was just no way he could have seen out the remainder of his £500,000-a-week contract.

Per The Telegraph, Ronaldo will not receive a single penny in compensation from United following his rather dramatic exit.

So, the Real Madrid legend is once again looking for a new club and he might not have too many options, despite the fact he’s a free agent.

Former team Sporting Lisbon are a possible destination, while the rumours linking him with Chelsea don’t seem to be going away.

But one club he certainly won’t be joining is Burnley – and that’s the stance of both Ronaldo and the team’s manager, Vincent Kompany.

Ronaldo would not want to join a team outside the Champions League, let alone in the Championship.

And Kompany made his feelings towards the 37-year-old very clear on BBC’s coverage of France vs Australia at the 2022 World Cup.

When asked by host Gary Lineker whether he’d take Ronaldo at Turf Moor, the Manchester City legend rather savagely replied: “We need players who can run.”

Needless to say, Kompany’s response had the BBC studio cracking up…

Well, Vinnie certainly isn’t going to be on Ronaldo’s Christmas card list!

Another Premier League legend who also reacted to the Ronaldo news on the BBC’s World Cup broadcast was Rio Ferdinand, although he certainly didn’t cheekily mock his former teammate.

While covering Mexico and Poland’s dull 0-0 draw, he said: “I think that both parties will be delighted now. He obviously did the interview with the mindset that he wanted to get out of the football club. Wasn’t happy, he made that very clear.

“But I also think that Erik ten Hag has got what he wanted as well in this situation. Both parties are happy, move on. It is the next chapter for Cristiano Ronaldo.”

When asked where Ronaldo may move to next, Ferdinand added: “I don’t know. It depends on what his motivation is. Is it to play in the Champions League? Is it money? Is it just to continue playing somewhere with a nice climate?

“This will be going on behind the scenes and I’m sure we’ll find out in due course.”
