Cristiano Ronaldo will pay a €19m fine and be sentenced to two years in prison for tax evasion.
On Thursday, an agreement was finally reached between Ronaldo, the Prosecutor’s Office and the State Attorney following months of negotiations.
However, because the 33-year-old has pleaded guilty to four tax crimes, he will not actually be expected to serve any time behind bars.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Ronaldo evaded €14,768,897 worth of tax between 2011 and 2014.
The final agreement reached through the criminal court means that amount will be reduced to €5.7m, but with a hefty fine as well as interest to pay on top of it, the Juventus star will end up having to fork out a whopping €19m. He will also pay for the State’s legal costs.
Until now, Ronaldo had always insisted he was innocent and, almost a year ago, he said: “The Spanish Treasury knows in detail all my income, because we have given it to them; I have never hidden anything nor have I intended to evade taxes.”
