Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments immediately after the Champions League final made headlines worldwide but they weren’t news to everyone.
The Portuguese followed up a third consecutive Champions League win by revealing his future may not be in Madrid.
“In the coming days there’ll be answer about my future,” Ronaldo said after his Real Madrid side beat Liverpool 3-1 in Kyiv. “It has been very nice playing for Real Madrid.”
According to Marca, the 33-year-old really does intend to leave the club and his team-mates were told weeks ago.
The Spanish newspaper claim Ronaldo’s team-mates were informed of his desire to play elsewhere in the weeks building up to last weekend’s Champions League final.
However, many at Real Madrid still expect him to stay.
A €1 billion release clause in his contract means clubs are not exactly likely to pursue a move and Real Madrid hold much of the power.
The club are set to be frustrated by Ronaldo’s behaviour but, for now, his future is not their priority. Zinedine Zidane’s surprise resignation means focus is now on finding a new manager.
