Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken about his Manchester United exit ahead of Portugal kicking off their 2024 European Championship qualifying campaign.

United released the 38-year-old from his contract just before the 2022 World Cup.

The former Real Madrid forward berated the club and manager Erik ten Hag, forcing the Red Devils to act.

Ronaldo joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr and has found his feet, bagging nine goals and two assists in eight appearances.

However, Ronaldo’s ugly divorce from Man United left a bitter taste.

When asked about the exit, the player said he has learned his lesson from the situation and has no regrets.

Ronaldo said (via O Jogo): “Sometimes you have to go through some things to see who’s on your side. In a difficult phase, you can see who is on your side.

“I have no problem saying I had a bad career phase, but there’s no time for regrets. Life goes on, and, doing well or not, it was part of my growth.

“When we are at the top of the mountain, we often cannot see what is below.

“Now I’m more prepared, and that learning was important because I had never been through this, like in the last few months. Now I’m a better man.”

Despite the move to Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo has remained in the Portugal set-up under new coach Roberto Martinez and will continue as captain.

Many people thought Martinez would drop Ronaldo, but he gave him a call. Portugal start their Euro 2024 qualifiers this week with games against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg.

Ronaldo could become the most-capped international player ever if he plays against Liechtenstein on Thursday.

He is on 196 international appearances alongside Kuwait legend Bader Al-Mutawa.
