On June 19th, Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to make his 200th appearance for the Portuguese National Team against Iceland. However, the landmark has raised questions about how much longer the 38-year-old will be playing in his country’s colours.

In a press conference for the Euro Qualifiers, Portuguese media brought forth those questions about retirement to Ronaldo, who commented, “I will not give up the national team in any way. As Bruno Alves said, I will not give away my free seat”. He continued, “I never thought to reach that record [of 200 caps], but I have to continue. I have much more to do”

In an interview with Piers Morgan in November of 2022, Ronaldo emphasized his desire to play until the age of 40, effectively making the 2024 Euros his final tournament as a player. “I want to play two years more, three years more. So two or three years maximum. I want to finish at 40. I think 40 will be a good age… but I don’t know, I don’t know the future,” he said.

However, the Portuguese star has stated that even that is uncertain. “Sometimes you plan one thing for your life and, as I said many times, the life is dynamic and you never know what’s going to happen.”

Ronaldo played a key part in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina just last week, linking play in the front line and creating two big chances in the 90 minutes he was on the pitch. Only time will tell when the Al-Nassr talisman will eventually hang up his boots, but it is likely that it will still be a few years before we have to say our goodbyes to one of football’s legends.
