Portugal unsurprisingly made light work of Luxembourg in their latest 2022 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday evening.

Fernando Santos' side romped to a 5-0 victory thanks to a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo (x2) and goals from Bruno Fernandes and Joao Palhinha.

Ronaldo's first two strikes came from the penalty spot in the opening half of the match and he then secured his 58th career treble in the 87th-minute with a close-range header.

He's now scored 115 times on the international stage.

The 36-year-old's record for Portugal is absolutely insane and the Manchester United man came agonisingly close to netting yet another goal in the victory over Luxembourg.

It would have been arguably the best goal of his illustrious playing career as well...

In the 68th-minute of proceedings, Ronaldo perfectly controlled a cross into the box and while the ball was airborne, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner produced a stunning overhead kick that looked destined to ripple the back of the net.

However, Luxembourg's goalkeeper Anthony Moris - who plays for Union SG in Belgium's first division - was on hand to thwart Ronaldo with a save worthy of a prime Peter Schmeichel.

Take a look at the incident here...

Had that gone in, Ronaldo would have been the big favourite to win this year's FIFA Puskas Award.

But while his overhead kick didn't cross the line, the former Real Madrid man can still revel in the fact that he set yet another incredible record on Tuesday evening.

Ronaldo's hat-trick versus Luxembourg was his 10th for Portugal and that's more than any other player has netted for their country in history.

Another day, another record for a man who might just be the greatest ever male footballer on the international stage.

If he captains Portugal to World Cup glory out in Qatar next year, there won't even be a debate about that...
