Cristian Romero: “I’m excited to play and to wear this shirt” | OneFootball

Cristian Romero knew straight away that Tottenham Hotspur was the destination for the next chapter of his flourishing career.

“I’m so happy to be here at this great club,” he told us, speaking for the first time after completing his move from Atalanta on Friday. “From the moment I got the call I was sure it was the best option for me to keep improving and growing.

“Gio (Lo Celso) showed me the facilities and I’m so impressed. I hope to pay back all the confidence that the club has in me, and I will try to show that on the field.”

Cristian arrives here on the back of an incredible few months. In Italy, he helped Atalanta to a third-successive third place finish in Serie A, qualifying again for the Champions League, and to the Coppa Italia final. His performances earned the prestigious accolade of ‘Best Defender’ at the Serie A awards.

Soon after, he was part of the Argentina squad - alongside Gio - that triumphed in the Copa America in Brazil, their first major trophy since 1993.

Now it’s a new life on and off the pitch for the 23-year-old from Cordoba...

“It was a great year for me individually,” he reflected. “Thanks to Atalanta, I’ve improved my game and I’ve made a huge jump in my career. Now everything’s better after signing with this big club. I’m very happy and excited to play, to wear this shirt and to pay back that confidence.

“I knew this project was ideal for me. It’s a great club and I want to help inside and outside the pitch. It’s a great club with a great history, so we have to keep on building on that.”
