Cristian Romero has been confirmed as Tottenham's new club captain.
The centre-back was one of two vice-captains at Spurs last season and, following Heung-min Son's departure earlier this summer, he has now been handed the armband on a permanent basis.
Romero led Spurs out against Arsenal and Bayern Munich in pre-season but Thomas Frank had said that a final decision on the captaincy was still to be made.
The Spurs boss has now made that call, making the decision himself rather than leaving it to his players.
Romero's first match as club captain could see him immediately lift a trophy, as Spurs take on PSG in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night.
"I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero, and he’s going to be our captain," Frank said.
"He was very honoured and very happy about it. It’s a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season.
"I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way, and outside the pitch he’s always pushing the team."
Maddison was also a vice-captain last season under Ange Postecoglou as part of a four-man leadership group, which also involved Guglielmo Vicario.
Frank will similarly name several players to support Romero this season, but has decided to wait until the transfer window closes before doing so.
"I want a leadership group as well," Frank said.
"Of course, one will wear the armband and be the captain, but I would like to have as many leaders as possible, four to five in the leadership group who can help, because it’s the same with me, I can’t do everything on my own and need a superb coaching staff around me.
"I will name that leadership group after the window to give me time to assess everything."
