Michele Criscitiello of Sportitalia believes that not even having a conversation with Antonio Conte in the summer about becoming the new head coach is ‘AC Milan’s biggest regret’.

Heading into the summer there were calls from a section of the fanbase to hire Conte given that he has multiple trophies to his name and was seen by some to be a demanding coach who could take the club to the next level.

It has even emerged in recent days that some leaders of the Curva Sud were working to try and persuade the club to hire him during the summer, something that Conte himself admitted that he is flattered by.

Fonseca meanwhile appears to be back under pressure after back-to-back defeats against Bayer Leverkusen and Fiorentina, while Napoli have a lead at the top of the table and are five points ahead of the Rossoneri.

Criscitiello published a column on Sportitalia – the website that he is the CEO of – and he took aim at Milan for not even listening to the ideas that Conte had during the summer.

“Conte had the strength to reunite an environment that had crumbled. He fixed the dressing room with everyone ready to flee far from Naples,” he said.

“He made Aurelio De Laurentiis spend a lot of money and achieved a record [in terms of results] that is now useless but makes you feel good during the week. Conte is and will be Milan’s biggest regret. Not even letting him sit down was an affront that the Rossoneri club could not afford “
