Following the conclusion of the Champions League season we’ve looked at some of the best statistics from a memorable European campaign.

Here are the players to have created the most chances in the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League.

Giovani Di Lorenzo – Napoli (20)

Napoli have had a season to remember after being crowned champions of Italy for the first time in 33 years.

Luciano Spalletti’s side also reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in their history and were among the competition’s most impressive performers during the early stages of the season.

Napoli eased through a group stage containing Liverpool, Ajax and Rangers, scoring 20 goals in just six group games before thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 on aggregate in the Round of 16.

Giovani Di Lorenzo was a crucial presence for Napoli at right-back, with the defender scoring twice, providing two assists and creating 20 chances. No defender in the Champions League created more chances than the 29-year-old.

Joshua Kimmich – Bayern Munich (20)

Joshua Kimmich has been the heartbeat of the Bayern Munich side for several seasons and produced another impressive campaign on the Champions League stage.

Kimmich scored once and provided three assists during the German side’s run to the last eight, while just four players created more than his 20 chances. The 28-year-old also ranked third for passes into the final third and progressive passes, with Kimmich’s distribution, as ever, excellent.

Bernardo Silva – Manchester City (20)

Bernardo Silva was named in UEFA’s official Champions League Team of the Season, having had an integral role in Manchester City’s maiden triumph.

Silva starred during the knockout rounds with crucial goals in wins over Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, to complete a season in which the Portuguese playmaker brought consistent class to the Manchester City midfield.

He ended the club’s European campaign with 20 chances created and a winners’ medal, as the Citizens completed a historic treble under Pep Guardiola.

Sandro Tonali – AC Milan (22)

Sandro Tonali has had to face comparisons to Andrea Pirlo since his initial emergence, with the midfielder’s Brescia links, elegance in possession, and haircut leading to inevitable comparisons to the Italian icon.

Tonali was a standout performer as AC Milan reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2007, creating a huge 22 chances from his position at the base of the midfield.

The 22-year-old – who ended the campaign with two assists – also covered more distance than any other player in the Champions League (139.4km).

Kevin De Bruyne – Manchester City (22)

Kevin De Bruyne also created 22 chances during the 2022/23 Champions League season, with the Manchester City midfielder celebrating success in the competition despite the disappointment of his early substitution through injury in the final.

De Bruyne led the Champions League for assists (7) during City’s victorious campaign, ahead of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior (6), Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco (5) and Bayern Munich’s Joao Cancelo (5).

The Belgium international also topped the Premier League for assists last season to win the division’s Playmaker Award. It is the fourth time De Bruyne has led the league for assists since arriving at the Etihad in 2015.

Piotr Zielinski – Napoli (23)

Piotr Zielinski ranked second for chances created, having been the creative spark behind Napoli’s campaign.

Napoli were free-scoring during the group stage to record big wins over Liverpool (4-1), Ajax (6-1) and Rangers (3-0) and progress to the knockout rounds. Only Manchester City (32) scored more than Napoli’s 26 goals in the competition and Zielinski’s creativity was a major part of the club’s attacking game-plan.

The Polish midfielder scored four goals, provided two assists and created 23 chances for team-mates.

Jack Grealish – Manchester City (35)

Jack Grealish created more chances than any other player during the 2022/23 Champions League season, with the winger having found his feet at Manchester City this season.

Grealish was an almost ever-present during City’s triumphant season in Europe, creating 12 more chances than any other player in the tournament. The England international led the competition for both chances created and fouls won, while he ranked behind only Vinicius Junior for progressive carries and carries into the penalty area.

Grealish’s 35 chances created were the most recorded in a Champions League season since Ajax’s Dusan Tadic in 2018/19 (37).

It’s fair to say he’s enjoyed the celebrations since after City were crowned champions of Europe for the first time.
