However, defeat to Luton Town at Wembley Stadium was a huge loss for the Sky Blues. Following the defeat, Gyokeres attracted interest from across Europe.

He has proven himself just as capable in the Portuguese league, scoring 22 times in just 25 league games. He is one of the top scorers in all of Europe, and well worth every penny of his transfer fee.

However, Gyokeres' exit left a big hole for Coventry to fill.

Coventry signed Haji Wright and Ellis Simms to replace Gyokeres

To replace Gyokeres, Coventry signed two strikers for big money. The first was Haji Wright, who joined the club in a club-record deal for a reported £7.7 million deal. The 25-year-old signed from Turkish top flight Antalyaspor, where he scored 15 times in 28 league matches.

Meanwhile, Simms joined from Everton after a successful spell on loan at Sunderland the year prior. The forward scored seven times in just 17 matches, and at just 22-years-old, had a huge future ahead of him.

was another big outlay for the club, as they sought to reinvest the money they made from selling Gyokeres in the summer.

The Coventry recruitment team identified these two players as the men to replace one of the best strikers in Europe. While this seemed like an impossible task, they did a lot better than anybody could have expected under the circumstances.

The pair impressed after a slow start in the Championship

Things didn't go amazingly for the pair after signing for Coventry. Simms only scored three times before the new year for his new side. Wright was inconsistent, while still being the club's best goalscorer.

However, the pair have impressed since the end of the January transfer window. Since February began, Wright has scored six and assisted once, while Simms has scored eight times in his last nine games - five more goals than he managed in the first half of the campaign.

Their goals have seen the Sky Blues win five of their last ten matches. The club have only failed to score in one match since Christmas, showing how potent the club's attack is. Their 63 goals scored gives them the sixth-best attack in the Championship.

With Simms and Wright scoring 26 goals between them (12 and 14, respectively), they have already replaced the tally made by Gyokeres.

Despite a recent 2-1 home loss to Cardiff City, the Sky Blues are still in the race for the top six. They currently sit seventh in the Championship, just four points adrift of Norwich City.

If the pair can continue their impressive goalscoring form of recent weeks, then Coventry are in with a fantastic chance of finishing in the top six.

After losing Gyokeres in the summer, the Coventry recruitment team have to be given praise for finding the right players to replace the striker.
