Coventry Live have reported that the Sky Blues had Cranie within their side for their pre-season friendly against Mansfield Town on Tuesday with them taking a look at the defender ahead of a potential move.

Cranie has already spent time with Coventry earlier in his career with the defender having managed to make 120 appearances for the Sky Blues in his three seasons with the club between 2009 and 2012.

Since then, the 34-year-old has had spells with the likes of Barnsley, Huddersfield Town, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Luton.

Mark Robins will now have had the chance to take a look at the defender as the Sky Blues weigh up whether they should offer him a deal as their summer recruitment drive continues.

The verdict

This could be a very wise move from Coventry and Cranie is a player with vast amounts of Championship experience that would serve the Sky Blues very well if they were to offer him a contract for next term.

The 34-year-old is a player that has a lot to offer still and there is no signs of him slowing down with him having made 23 league appearances for Luton last term.

Cranie also has the benefit of knowing exactly what it takes to play for the Sky Blues having already enjoyed a three-year spell with Coventry earlier in his career.

The defender was always a reliable performer in his first spell with the club and he would surely jump at the chance to return to the club and try and force his way into Robins’ side next season.

If Cranie can impress during his trial period with the club then it would be a no-brainer for them to offer him a deal for next season. The 34-year-old’s versatility could be invaluable to the Sky Blues and he would be a good presence to have in and around the training ground you would imagine.
