Wes Jobello's time at Coventry City started well but a nasty injury put paid to that

Key Takeaways

  • Wes Jobello's Coventry City career started with promise but was cut short by injury, leaving fans wondering about what could have been.
  • Despite a brief return to full fitness, Jobello struggled for game time at Coventry and eventually had his contract terminated in January 2022.
  • Jobello has since embarked on a journey playing for clubs in France, Romania, and Australia, a far cry from his days in the English Football League.

The 2019/20 campaign was a memorable one for Coventry City for a number of different reasons, but one member of the Sky Blues' squad that season will look back and think about what could have been.

Martinique international Wes Jobello joined the Sky Blues from French side Gazelec Ajaccio in the summer of 2019, and despite a very bright start to life at St Andrew's, where Coventry were playing at the time, injury struck at the wrong time for the winger.

The former French youth international would actually remain on Coventry's books until January 2022 before his contract was terminated, and it's fair to say he was never able to replicate what he showed in his opening few weeks as a Coventry player after returning from injury.

Coventry City will feel like they were robbed by the fate of Wes Jobello

Mark Robins brought Jobello to the club in the summer of 2019 as his side looked to make it two promotions in three seasons and return to the Championship for the first time since 2012.

Jobello immediately became a key player at St Andrew's, starting the Sky Blues' first ten league games of the season, registering one goal and one assist as Robins' side made a perfect start to their campaign, going unbeaten as they won five games and drew five, losing none.

However, disaster would strike at the end of September, and Jobello suffered an ACL injury which would keep him out for the rest of the season.

After such a bright start to the season, this was the last thing that Jobello or Coventry would have wanted, and even though he didn't realise it at the time, that was his Sky Blues' career as good as over.

In his absence, Coventry did win the League One title after the pandemic brought the season to a premature end, as the points-per-game system had them at the top of the pile, sealing a return to the Championship.

Jobello returned to full fitness in November 2020 with the Championship season in full flow, but he struggled for game time, and he made just three substitute appearances during the course of the season, totaling just 27 minutes, and it was clear he had no future in the West Midlands.

After failing to make a matchday squad during the 2021/22 season, his contract was terminated in January 2022, and his time as a Coventry player came to a premature end.

His time with the Sky Blues started so brightly, but an injury at an unfortunate time and promotion to the Championship put paid to his bright start, and it will be a case of what could have been for him at Coventry.

Wes Jobello's career since leaving Coventry City

Jobello has enjoyed a nomadic career since leaving Coventry, and has played in a number of different countries.

After his release in January 2022, he moved back to the country of his birth, France, signing for Boulogne in the third tier of French football, before leaving at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

From there, a move to Romanian side UTA Arad followed, and after a season there, he moved to fellow Romanian side FC Arges Pitesti, helping them to a 13th place finish in the 2023/24 season.

In what was a bit of a surprise move, the Martinique international completed a recent move to Australian semi-professional side the Preston Lions, a fair cry from his days playing in the EFL.

The Preston Lions currently compete in the Victoria Premier League, so it perhaps won't be the standard of football that Jobello became accustomed to in England and France, but the 30-year-old should register some impressive numbers playing at that level.
