Coventry City have submitted a renewed offer for Hull City centre back Charlie Hughes, placing the Championship promotion hopefuls in direct confrontation with the Tigers’ firm stance.

That’s according to BBC Sport’s Will Oelrich, reporting on Thursday evening.

The 21 year old remains a prized asset at the MKM Stadium, with head coach Sergej Jakirovic reiterating that his value could reach Premier League levels by the end of the season.

Hull have resisted sustained interest in Hughes throughout the summer, with Coventry and Sheffield United both lodging enquiries in recent weeks.

According to reports, Coventry’s latest bid follows earlier offers in the region of £4 million and £7 million, each swiftly rejected by the Tigers' hierarchy.

Jakirovic has been unequivocal about his position, insisting that Hughes’ development is best served by remaining in East Yorkshire.

Speaking after Hull’s defeat to Blackburn Rovers, the Croatian manager doubled down on his belief that the defender could command a valuation of £20 million if he continues his current trajectory.

Supporters remain reassured by the club’s insistence that Hughes, who missed the Blackburn fixture only due to illness, will not depart before Monday’s 7pm transfer deadline unless an extraordinary offer arrives.

Coventry City’s ambition tested by Hughes pursuit

For Coventry, the Hughes pursuit represents both a defensive priority and a statement of ambition. Manager Frank Lampard has overseen significant investment in his back line this summer, including the arrivals of Carl Rushworth, Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Miguel Angel Brau.

However, the Sky Blues’ defensive record last season - conceding 58 goals, the highest among the Championship’s top half - has underlined the need for a commanding central presence.

Hughes has been one of the Championship’s standout young defenders since his move from Wigan Athletic last year, earning captaincy duties under Jakirović and demonstrating leadership well beyond his years.

His calmness in possession and aerial dominance have attracted interest from Premier League clubs, including Brentford and West Ham, during his Wigan days.
