Milan van Ewijk is closing in on a move to Bundesliga outfit VFL Wolfsburg, but they have a ready-made replacement already.
Coventry City's Dutch wing-back Milan van Ewijk is closing in on a move to Bundesliga side VFL Wolfsburg, according to reports, and once upon a time, that would be devastating news for everyone connected to the club.
The Sky Blues look set to lose the rapid Dutchman to the Bundesliga, with talks between the player and Wolfsburg now at an advanced stage.
Normally, losing one of your best players is enough to send a fanbase into meltdown, but Cov fans will not be too worried about this sale, having already signed a ready-made replacement earlier on during the window.
As Frank Lampard's side set their sights on another promotion push in the coming campaign, they have made just three additions to the squad so far this window, with one of those being flying right wing-back Kaine Kesler-Hayden, who has joined the club in a £3.5 million deal from Aston Villa.
Kesler-Hayden, 22, spent the previous season on loan in the Championship with Preston North End, where he impressed, winning the club's Sir Tom Finney Player of the Year, Players' Player of the Year, and Young Player of the Year.
With Aston Villa required to make sales to adhere to the financial fair play rules, Kesler-Hayden was made available for transfer, and Coventry swooped in early on to secure the defender's signature.
Van Ewijk joined Coventry in July 2023 for a similar fee to that of Kesler-Hayden - £3.5 million - and has since gone on to make 100 appearances for the club, scoring four times and assisting a further nine across all competitions in that time.
However, following rejected bids from Turkish club Besiktas, stating they wouldn't sell the 24-year-old for anything less than £8 million, Coventry have reached an agreement with Wolfsburg for the transfer of Van Ewijk, with Coventry set to at least double their money on the Dutchman.
With Coventry's opening game of the season at home to Hull just around the corner, Kesler-Hayden looks set to slot straight into that wing-back role with Van Ewijk's impending departure.
It is a sign of continued good recruitment and foresight at the CBS Arena, with this having become somewhat of a trademark in the past six years at the club.
Van Ewijk is just one of many players Coventry will have sold for a large profit, with others including the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer - they will be hoping to do similar with Kesler-Hayden in a few years' time.
With Frank Lampard replacing the long-serving Mark Robins at the helm last season, not many predicted just how well the former Chelsea and England international midfielder would do when taking over in the middle of the season.
Coventry sacked Robins whilst languishing 17th in the league, with a lot of Coventry fans shocked to see the Englishman lose his job after taking the club from League Two to a penalty shootout away from the Premier League.
However, Lampard silenced any critics, having guided Coventry to the playoffs at the end of the season before ultimately losing out to eventual playoff winners Sunderland, having won 48.48% of his games in charge.
With Kesler-Hayden replacing Van Ewijk on the right flank and Carl Rushworth replacing the injured Oliver Dovin in goal being the only major changes to the Coventry squad heading into next campaign, Sky Blues fans will be hoping for another strong season under Lampard.
