Thibaut Courtois has revealed he’s ‘waited for a long time’ to ‘play in the best club in the world’, after making his Real Madrid debut on Saturday evening.
The Belgian goalkeeper arrived at the Bernabéu from Chelsea this summer and had to wait until the third LaLiga game of the season to make his bow.
However, after completing his first ninety minutes for the club, Courtois admitted he had always dreamed of playing for Real and looked up to goalkeeping legend Iker Casillas when he was growing up.
“I’ve waited for this for a long time; to play in the best club in the world,” he told RMTV.
“When I was a child my idol was Iker, and when I was at Atleti playing in the Bernabéu was special because of the atmosphere, the warmth of the fans … But wearing the Madrid shirt was incredible.”
Having signed for the club on a six-year deal, Courtois says he feels good and is settling in well to his surroundings in the Spanish capital having played for Real’s rivals Atlético between 2011 and 2014.
“The first thing is settling into a new team. Training has gone well, but matches are a different story. When you come in late it can be difficult to get going, but I feel good.”
