Flamengo have obtained a court order to block the bank account of a namesake of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, reports Rio de Janeiro outlet G1.

The 22-year-old joined Wolves from the Brasileiro Serie A club during the January transfer window for £15 million.

Gomes was due £302,000 from Flamengo as payment for his economic rights on the deal.

The club proceeded to deposit it into an account with his full name – Joao Victor Gomes da Silva.

However, the Wolves man did not receive it, as the account belongs to someone that shares his name.

A Brazilian court has revealed that the money should have been deposited on January 31.

It was eventually deposited on February 27 into an account with a different CPF number (attributed by the Brazilian Federal Revenue to taxpayers) to Gomes’.

The mistake came from Flamengo and not the bank. The namesake of the Wolves midfielder will be unable to keep the money.

He has been ordered to return it and Gomes is expected to receive it afterwards.

His namesake would have deemed himself lucky, but the mistake was quickly discovered.

The right thing has to be done so as not to cause any problems for all the parties involved.

Gomes is slowly establishing himself as a key player for Julen Lopetegui’s side.

He hit the ground running on his debut, coming off the bench to bag the winner against Southampton.

The South American defensive midfielder has made two substitute appearances since then.

The Midlands club are 13th in the Premier League after 26 games, with five points separating them from the drop zone.
