Ipswich Town are closing in on the signing of Rangers defender George Edmundson with a six-figure fee agreed, according to EADT.

The centre-back spent the second half of last season out on loan with Derby County and looks set to leave permanently this summer.

But would he be a good signing for the Tractor Boys? And do they need him?

Our FLW writers share their thoughts…

This could be decent business for the Tractor Boys to oversee.

Overall, it’s been a really encouraging summer for Ipswich. Cook’s work has been really focused and he’s not pulled any punches.

There’s still work to be done, though, to get Ipswich competitive in a really tough League One.

Edmundson is someone that impressed in difficult circumstances at Derby County last season, managing to put in some mature performances despite his age.

So, naturally, stepping down a level into League One should only enhance what he can bring to the table.

Cook has targeted quality this summer and this link continues that trend.

It’s another potential coup for Ipswich.

This could turn out to be an excellent bit of business.

Edmundson didn’t look out of place in the Championship whilst with Derby County last term, and it’s somewhat of a coup for Ipswich to land his signature this summer.

The Tractor Boys are showing real intent this summer, which will be pleasing to see for the Portman Road faithful.

They’ll have to deal with the weight of expectation on winning promotion this season though, as the signings are making Paul Cook’s side even stronger than it already was.

Edmundson still has his best years ahead of him if the early stages of his career are anything to go by, and it’s good to see Ipswich planning for the long-term.

With Luke Chambers departing Ipswich not so long ago, it makes perfect sense for the club to make their move for a defender that is still relatively early into his senior career.

Even though Edmundson hasn’t had much of a chance at Rangers under Steven Gerrard, he would be a great addition for any League One club looking for promotion to the Championship.

The 23-year-old is talented but unfortunately has had to battle with more experienced defenders at Ibrox such as Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, and others and he can’t compete against them right now.

Edmundson showed a lot of promise at Oldham Athletic which led to his move to the Scottish giants and even though he only played 10 times for Derby County on loan last season, you could see that he had something to offer at Championship level.

It’s a surprise that Edmundson isn’t heading to the second tier and is instead going to the level below, but Ipswich are clearly serious about being promotion challengers, and spending a seven-figure fee on him is somewhat of a statement of intent.

It’s not guaranteed to pay off but I think Edmundson has more chance of being a success than a failure – his age as well means that he still has time to develop and become a better player and that is shown in the fee that is being spent.
