Manchester City are in desperate need of reinforcements this month. With the January transfer window now open finding a midfielder who can step into the void left by Rodri’s season-ending knee injury is a must. But finding that player is no simple task. One player who potentially could step into that void is Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich.
Now a new report indicates that Bayern Munich are pressing the German international for a decision on his future. Does that situation allow an opportunity for Manchester City to step in? It potentially could, but it remains to be seen if City will swoop.
Florian Plettenberg has reported via X that Bayern Munich are demanding a clear indication of his future plans from Joshua Kimmich. The German international is now in the final six months of his current contract. Furthermore, Plettenberg reports that Bayern are desperate to keep Kimmich at the club. Lastly, Plettenberg adds that Kimmich has yet to make a definitive decision on his future.
On paper, at least Joshua Kimmich would fill one of Manchester City’s major needs. He could immediately slot into Manchester City’s midfield and help alleviate the issues that have arisen in Rodri’s prolonged absence. Kimmich is a proven performer at the highest level and has played under Guardiola before. In terms of a quick fix to City’s issues, Kimmich may be the ideal one. Especially in a market that is so hard to operate in like the January transfer market. But that would depend on if Bayern would sell Kimmich this month. It would also depend on whether Kimmich wanted to leave Germany in January.
Jack Gaughan has previously reported for the Daily Mail that Joshua Kimmich does have a long-standing interest in playing in the Premier League. Perhaps Manchester City could leverage that situation this month. There is also the very real possibility that Kimmich could leave Bayern Munich for free at the end of the season. Is that something Bayern Munich would be happy to see play out? That is another lever City could pull if they did decide that Kimmich was the player they needed to sign in January. Perhaps Bayern would rather pocket a transfer fee rather than lose a player for free in six months time.
Those facts do make it a realistic possibility that Manchester City could swoop for Joshua Kimmich this month. He would be a player who could immediately step into Pep Guardiola’s squad and play almost instantly. Finding that type of player in January isn’t an easy task so perhaps a move for Kimmich does make a lot of sense. It just remains to be seen if it’s a move both Manchester City and Kimmich are keen to pursue this month.
