Former agent Jon Smith has issued a passionate plea to the FA, urging them to “move heaven and earth” to appoint Liverpool legend Jürgen Klopp as the new England manager, succeeding Gareth Southgate.
Gareth Southgate transformed the England team from a middling side to one of the world’s top footballing nations. Under his guidance, England reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018 and were finalists in the European Championships in both 2020 and 2024. Despite these achievements, Southgate decided to step down after the 2024 Euros, marking the end of an era.
The FA now faces the challenging task of finding a successor who can maintain and build upon Southgate’s legacy. English managers like Frank Lampard, Eddie Howe, and Graham Potter have been mentioned as potential candidates. However, there is also speculation about elite managers such as Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp taking the helm.

Jon Smith, a prominent figure in football circles, believes Klopp would be the perfect fit for the England job. Speaking to Caught Offside, Smith said, “My choice to replace Southgate would be Klopp, absolutely. He’s out of a job – not that he needs one – but my only concern is that it’s a bit too soon and he probably needs a year out to spend some time with his family. England are in a pretty decent place, but they need excitement. Gareth obviously did a good job over the years tactically, but we need a manager that brings high energy, younger, more evolved tactics, and somebody like Klopp would be phenomenal. I’d move heaven and earth to get him.”
Klopp’s record speaks for itself. He led Liverpool to Premier League and Champions League glory, bringing a level of excitement and tactical innovation that could greatly benefit the England team. Smith suggests that if Klopp needs time off, an interim coach could be appointed, making his eventual hire a revolutionary move for England.
Despite the allure of a high-profile international manager, Smith acknowledges that the FA is more likely to opt for an English candidate. “I think the FA will actually end up going for a [Graham] Potter or an Eddie Howe, because it’s an easy and a justifiable appointment.”
Harry Redknapp, another seasoned figure in English football, believes that Eddie Howe would find it difficult to turn down the offer to manage the Three Lions, even though he is currently at Newcastle. The appointment of an English manager like Howe or Potter would be a safer and more predictable choice, but it might lack the revolutionary impact that Klopp could bring.
The appointment of the next England manager is a decision of monumental importance. While English candidates offer a sense of continuity and stability, the potential to bring in a world-class manager like Klopp presents an exciting opportunity for a transformative era. The FA’s decision will shape the future of English football, and as Jon Smith passionately advocates, making a huge move for Klopp could be the key to unlocking England’s full potential on the international stage.
