Despite being Borussia Dortmund’s senior-most player, Julian Brandt has underwhelmed this season and recently fallen out of favor with head coach Niko Kovač. Brandt had been a regular starter for nearly the entire lackluster season and has only recently been dropped from the starting eleven by Kovač.
Brandt’s underlying stats this season have also disappointed compared to his goals, assists, and shot-creating actions of previous terms. Brandt was touted to be a new leader this season, even changing his kit number from nineteen to ten. He was given the Vice Captain role behind Captain Emre Can and fellow Vice Captain, Nico Schlotterbeck. Still, Brandt has not adapted to this leadership and instead regressed in his technical abilities. Some of this may come down to a lack of confidence and inability to handle the increased pressure, but this is speculation.
With just over one year left on his contract, both Dortmund and Julian Brandt may seek a break-up sooner rather than later. Sky journalist, Florian Plettenberg, now reports that fellow Bundesliga side Werder Bremen are closely watching Brandt’s situation in BVB and could make a move for him this summer. Brandt is a Bremen native and could adapt well to the mid-table club, but concrete talks have not yet begun. Brandt’s high salary in Dortmund could make it difficult to land a deal with Bremen, but if all parties favor the transfer, then a deal could be made after negotiations.
This is Julian Brandt’s sixth season at Dortmund. In that time, he’s scored 44 goals and made 256 appearances. Would you sell Brandt if you had a chance?
