Could Gio pick up Rangers’ interest in Croat star?
There is absolutely no evidence Rangers are interested in Croatia’s Ivan Lepinjica any more (if they ever were) with the story originating in Croatian press on the 12th of June last year in a tiny little segment claiming Steven Gerrard wanted him on a loan to buy.
Since then, the story has spread wings with Clickbait Insider especially using it and claiming we’ve bid three times for the Rijeka man, but the only information we can find is the following:
“Ivan Lepinjica – although not a great season behind him, considering that he was in the background with Simon Rožman – is also the target of several foreign clubs from strong leagues, such as Spain, Italy, France … Mostly these are one-year loan options with the option to buy because Lepinjica is a young player and it pays to wait for him, to give him a chance to impose himself. Talks about his possible departure have also been going on for some time, and Glasgow Rangers have entered the fray in recent days. The Scottish champions, on whose bench Steven Gerrard sits, would also like to bring Lepinjica on loan with a “buy option”, and when Lepinjica wants to play for such a world midfielder, then it is clear that he has quality and can hope to get a chance in Glasgow.”
That’s from June last year, and that’s from Croatian press, but there’s been nothing since bar Scottish press reports and of course protagonist Gerrard is gone.
The midfielder was asked today about his future:
“I won’t think too much about leaving until a concrete offer comes in. I am focused on my preparations for the new season and I want to do them as well as possible. For me, the aim is to be better than last season and to play more games and be better. At the beginning of every new season, I always go into it with an ambition to make this ‘my season.’ Whoever I play for, I hope this will be the case. Which league would I prefer to play in? Every one of the big five European leagues are great competitions, but we will see.”
In short, completely vague, but the one concrete confirmation is he wants what the original report did say – one of the big five leagues.
Which clearly rules Rangers out if his heart is set on Spain, France, Germany, England or Italy.
Not that we have an iota of evidence Gio is interested in this guy.
Not that he’s a bad player, actually seems half decent. But maybe our manager will gain an interest, who knows.
