Following their relegation to the Championship, Sheffield United look set for a rebuild after releasing a number of senior players.

Five senior players will depart Bramall Lane this summer, and Chris Wilder faces a tough job on his hands to replace that sort of experience with over 1,000 Blades appearances between the five moving on.

However, one player the Blades have been linked with recently is Nottingham Forest centre-back Joe Worrall. Worrall was the Reds captain, but he's fallen out of favour and was loaned to Turkish side Besiktas in January.

If Wilder was able to bring him to Bramall Lane, it would be a real coup with the 27-year-old being vastly experienced at Championship level.

Sheffield United urged to sign Joe Worrall this summer

After falling out of favour at the City Ground, Joe Worrall could be available this summer, whether that be on loan or on a permanent basis, and Football League World's Sheffield United fan pundit, Owain Wyse, believes that signing the defender would help replace some of the experience the Blades have lost.

Owain said: "Joe Worrall is a player we’re linked with quite often. We were linked with him at the start of this season and I think he’d make a good signing.

"Anel (Ahmedhodžić) looks to be on his way out, Basham has gone and Baldock, who has filled in at centre-half quite regularly in the past, has also gone, and it doesn’t look like Holgate will be coming back.

“We could do a lot worse than signing Worrall. He has a wealth of Championship experience as well as having played around 40 games in the top-flight, and he brings leadership. "He was Forest captain for a long time and as we go through a rebuild in the summer we’re going to have to replace the real characters in the dressing room, your Sharp’s, your Baldock’s, your Norwood’s and your Basham’s. "These players bring a leadership element and a strong identity which you really need in the squad, and you need in a promotion campaign.

“I think Worrall brings that, and I would be looking to bring him in.”

Sheffield United won't be alone in their interest in Joe Worrall

Joe Worrall hasn't had the best of times on loan in Turkey with Besiktas, but that could work in the favour of clubs like Sheffield United, as it'll mean that top-flight clubs in England and abroad may not want to sign him this summer.

However, this may open the door for fellow Championship clubs to try and sign him, and Middlesbrough were linked with a move for Worrall in January, and could well reignite that interest in the coming months.

After leading Nottingham Forest to Championship promotion and skippering them in the Premier League, Worrall would be a real coup for Championship clubs, and if a club was able to get his signature over the line, then they'd look well-placed for a successful season.

With uncertainty over Anel Ahmedhodžić's future at the club, and Forest asking for just £4million, it's certainly a realistic deal for the Blades this summer.

Given the loss of experienced players, it's fair to say that Sheffield United will need to sign someone of Worrall's ilk this summer, and bringing him to the club must be a priority for Chris Wilder.
