Chelsea’s Champions League manager has dropped his verdict on current head coach Enzo Maresca as the Blues boss looks to succeed too.

Roberto Di Matteo was the manager when Chelsea won the Champions League against all the odds back in 2012, and he is only one of two managers to win the prestigious European competition at the club, alongside Thomas Tuchel who won it back in 2021 of course.

EXCLUSIVE! These Coaches are ‘super high’ on one new Chelsea signing!

Di Matteo was only the interim manager and not one person backed him or Chelsea to win the competition when they did. They beat giants like Barcelona and Bayern Munich to win it in 2012, and it was a literal dream come true for him and everyone else in the team and involved with the club. It’s memories that will live forever.

And now, Maresca is trying to first qualify for the Champions Leeague as the club look to try and bring the glory days back.

Di Matteo has been speaking this week in words picked up by The Metro.

‘It’s very tight in the top half of the table – there’s just five points separating Chelsea in fourth and Bournemouth in 10th,’ Di Matteo added.

‘All of those clubs right now will be looking at the top five, and Champions League qualification, as a realistic goal.

‘That’s Chelsea’s priority now; Champions League football would be seen as a step up – an improvement. I think they’re more than capable of doing it; they have a strong team, and some injured players are coming back – there’s definitely reason to be optimistic.

‘I really like Enzo Maresca – his team plays great football, on the front foot, and they create a lot of chances. Things could be better in terms of conversion, but there’s a good system in place there.

‘I don’t see an issue there, with Maresca, at all. He’s a very dynamic, well-prepared, knowledgeable manager and coach.’
