Costacurta tips Milan for Champions League success: “A nuisance for everyone”

Alessandro Costacurta has made the prediction that AC Milan could actually perform better in the Champions League than in Serie A because of the way their team has been built.

Milan have not exactly started the 2024-25 Serie A season in the best way as they are winless after three games, with a 2-2 draw against Torino and the same result away at Lazio either side of a 2-1 defeat in Parma.

The first game of the new Champions League format awaits on Tuesday after tomorrow’s game against Venezia, and the Rossoneri will meet fellow European heavyweights Liverpool, with tough games against Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen among the remaining fixtures.

Costacurta spoke on Sky and he outlined why Milan – despite their poor start to the season – could provide surprises in the Champions League and have no need to fear any opponent.

“Milan must believe, because they have the right players for the European scene. While in Italy they don’t find the motivation to be able to raise their performance, in Europe they will find it because they are strong both technically and physically. They will be a nuisance for everyone, everyone, everyone,” he said (via Radio Rossonera).

As someone who won over 20 major trophies during his career with Milan, Costacurta knows what it takes to be successful and he hinted at a lack of leadership from the players who were already part of the team.

“In my opinion, those who were there didn’t have great personality, because Theo Hernandez – who is the vice captain – doesn’t possess compelling leadership. He’s an excellent player.

“The choice that Ibra and Milan made is to take someone who has the strength to drag the team along not only in good times, but especially in bad times.”
