Billy Costacurta believes that Matteo Gabbia, especially given the renewal, should be the captain of AC Milan moving forward. Giving the armband to someone else would be ‘useless”, according to the club legend.

Gabbia penned his renewal with Milan on Thursday, extending until 2029, and he played a key part in the Rossoneri’s 3-0 win against Empoli last night. He has been the best defender since the second half of last season and Costacurta, the club legend, believes he should be captain.

Speaking to Sky Italia last night, as cited by MilanNews, Costacurta discussed Gabbia’s renewal and the fact that Milan have changed captains quite a lot this season. In his mind, it would be right to give the armband to the defender and leave it with him.

I think Matteo Gabbia’s renewal is the best news. He’s the best defender they have, even in terms of his behaviour. When he speaks to the media, he speaks well. I think he is the captain of Milan, it’s useless to give it to others. The captain of Milan is Gabbia. He is a boy born in my province, raised in Milanello, so I’m very happy for him,” he stated.

For now, Davide Calabria remains the official captain of the team, even if Theo Hernandez has worn it the most this season as the vice-captain. One can definitely agree that it should be a constant in the team, a player that leads the team week in and week out.
