Portsmouth reportedly paid £250,000 plus add-ons to sign Northern Ireland international Paddy Lane from Fleetwood Town on transfer deadline day.

The final day of the January window was a successful one for the League One club as they signed Manchester United defender Di’Shon Bernard on loan and landed Lane permanently.

Pompey announced just hours before the 11pm deadline that the 21-year-old had joined from Fleetwood on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Andrew Moon from the BBC has since revealed that the deal cost the Fratton Park outfit £250,000 plus add-ons.

Lane enjoyed an eye-catching debut season in the EFL after stepping up from non-league in the summer of 2021 – scoring five times and providing eight assists on his way to winning the League One Young Player of the Year award.

The Northern Ireland international, who is comfortable as a midfielder as well as on the flanks, has struggled to reach those levels for Fleetwood this term but Pompey boss John Mousinho believes he has “huge potential” and is ready to make an impact right now.

The Verdict

This looks like an outstanding bit of business from a Portsmouth perspective.

His development has stalled a little this season but Lane was one of the most exciting players in League One last term and that talent hasn’t gone anywhere.

A move to Pompey, where he’ll be alongside higher quality and more technical players, could be just what Lane needs to get back to his best.

If he can fulfil his potential at Fratton Park, that £250,000 plus add-ons will look like an absolute bargain.
