Paulo Fonseca has been criticized for his rotational choices at times this season, and AC Milan are suffering as a result of some choices being made.

Since taking the reigns at Milan in the summer, Fonseca has often been a polarising figure among the fans. Many saw his appointment as questionable, and as time has gone on, this viewpoint has become more popular.

Six months into his project, there are no signs of a consistent identity, or even a preferred XI due to the heavy level of rotation which occurs most across the defensive line.

As Corriere dello Sport (via Milan News) writes this morning, there are six faces in the defence, and Fonseca has yet to crack the code. A struggle which the paper compares to a ‘Rubik’s cube’. There have been six pairings of the defence so far, and the changes have been extremely frequent.

  • Gabbia-Tomori (five games, five conceded)
  • Thiaw-Pavlovic (four games, five conceded)
  • Tomori-Pavlovic (four games, nine conceded)
  • Thiaw-Tomori (two games, three conceded)
  • Gabbia-Pavlovic (one game, zero conceded)
  • Thiaw-Pavlovic (one game, zero conceded)

17 games, 22 conceded. Worrying statistics that are ultimately not being helped by the consistent chop and change strategy deployed by Fonseca. The longer his tests continue, the more Milan will struggle, which in turn harms his position.
