AC Milan director Paolo Maldini has made the bold and encouraging proclamation that the Scudetto of last season must act as a starting point rather than the means to an end.

Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) talks about how Milan captured their first league title in 11 years thanks to the brilliant work of the owners and management down to the coaching staff and squad, and of course Maldini was among the protagonists of the Scudetto win.

He spoke yesterday in Trento during the Sport Festival and remarked: “For me this team is stronger than that of last year. We are starting to win, we are reigning champions and the responsibility should not scare us.”

As the paper explains, the Rossoneri technical director does not hide and is betting strongly on his Milan who want to repeat their Scudetto victory and earn a second star. It will not be easy because there is great competition, but the desire and enthusiasm was the extra weapon last season.

Domestically the goal is to hoist another trophy, but in Europe – more specifically the Champions League – the road to get back to the top is still long and not only involves growth on the pitch, but also off the pitch, as Maldini admitted.

“The more revenues we make, the more we invest, from here the restructuring of our football passes,” he said. Maldini knows well that in order to compete with the top European clubs, ideas are not enough, but money is also needed to make important investments.

This is why Milan and Maldini hope to soon have their own stadium: “Milan does not end at San Siro: we have to create something that makes us competitive. Otherwise we will tell each other about the past and it is a prospect that I do not like.”
