Last week in Luque, Paraguay, the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana draws were held but failed to define Corinthians’ second-round opponents.

Having qualified for the preliminary round of the competition, Corinthians may have a complicated path to securing a place in the group stage.

Corinthians will be watching the first round on TV, where they will find out whether they will take on Bolivia’s fourth-placed side (Nacional Potosí or CD San José) or Paraguay’s Guarani.

It’s worth remembering that Guarani eliminated Corinthians in the 2015 Copa Libertadores round-of-16 (3-0 aggregate) on their way to a semi-final run.

Should Corinthians get by their second-round opponents, they will face the winner of Uruguay’s Cerro Largo and Chile’s Palestino in the third and final qualifying round.

This is only Cerro Largo’s second continental competition in club history. The Uruguayans qualified for the 2012 Copa Sudamericana but were eliminated by Bolivia’s Aurora in the first qualifying round.

Palestino, meanwhile, qualified for last year’s Libertadores group stage by knocking off Independiente Medellín on penalties before upsetting Argentina’s Talleres 4-3 on aggregate.

The Chileans then put up a magnificent effort in Group A, missing the knockout stage by three points despite being paired with Internacional and River Plate.

Should Corinthians qualify for the group stage, they will be placed in a very favourable Group B alongside Palmeiras, Bolivar (BOL), and Tigre (ARG).
