Simone Inzaghi made nine changes to his side that beat Lazio 6-0 on Monday night, starting Josep Martinez in goal, Tajon Buchanan and Carlos Augusto at wing-back, Port Zielinski and Davide Frattesi in midfield and Marko Arnautovic and Mehdi Taremi up top.

Udinese also made several changes, most notably handing a first start to Alexis Sanchez for the first time since he returned to the club in the summer. This was his first appearance in Udinese colours in 13 years.

Udinese handed Inter the lead with half an hour gone. Taremi capitalised on a turnover in the Udinese half, carried the ball forwards before feeding Arnautovic into the area, who slotted a well-taken finish into the bottom corner.

There was a medical emergency in the stands just before the 40th minute. Players remained on the pitch before applause rang out, signalling that the person in question had been seen to and was okay.

Inter had been waiting to take a corner just before the incident, which was eventually taken by Asllani, who scored directly from the set-piece after a switch-off at the back from the Bianconeri.

The Nerazzurri, the dominant side on the night, had two chances to make it three or four-nil by the end of the night.

Taremi struck the post from the edge of the area after being freed by second-half substitute Lautaro Martinez. If anything, the Iranian had too much time and overthought his finish.

Lautaro himself could have founud the net, but managed to sky over from two yards out following a low ball in from the right from Denzel Dumfries, but the flag was up and it would not have counted anyway.

Comfortable in holding onto a 2-0 scoreline, Inter progressed to the Coppa Italia quarter-finals with relative ease, and will now go on to face Lazio in the quarter-finals in March.

Full-time: Inter 2-0 Udinese

Arnautovic 30, Asllani 45+2.
