Convincing early signs from Mehdi Taremi are a big boost for Inter Milan in terms of their depth in attacking areas.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

When Inter signed Taremi this summer, it was fairly clear what their idea was.

The Iranian international was not just a player the Nerazzurri brought in to be a backup option.

Rather, Inter wanted Taremi to be a player who would genuinely be a starting-quality striker.

The former Porto striker, it could be said, was meant to fill a similar role in the squad to that which Edin Dzeko had done for two seasons.

Of course, breaking in to the starting eleven on a regular basis is never going to be easy for Taremi.

Inter have a clear first-choice strike partnership from last season. Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram were certainly an effective duo over the course of last campaign.

But the reality is that the Argentine and French internationals cannot start every match.

Therefore, Inter’s intent has been to try and have an attack where the quality does not drop off when one or Martinez or Thuram are absent.

Convincing Early Signs From Mehdi Taremi A Boost For Inter Attacking Depth

Taremi got his first big opportunity to start over the weekend against Lecce.

The Iranian international had already come off the bench in Inter’s Serie A opener away to Genoa. He had a convincing cameo, helping set up Thuram’s second goal.

But against Lecce on Saturday, Taremi was in the starting eleven for the first time in Serie A.

The reason for this was an injury to captain Martinez.

The Argentine was out due to a muscle problem, not overly surprising considering his truncated preseason.

But Inter did not miss a beat. Taremi assisted Matteo Darmian for the Nerazzurri’s opener against Lecce, and more broadly put in the kind of performance that stitched the attack together.

This was exactly the kind of response that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi would have wanted with his captain on the sidelines.

It will still be tough for Taremi to earn a starting place week in and week out for Inter. Martinez and Thuram will make sure of that.

But it is inevitable that the two other starters will be out or require a rest here and there.

And with Taremi around, Inter won’t feel their absences too much.
